Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Review

The Asus Zenfone Max series has definitely produced one of the best phones in the mid-budget range. The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 is the successor of the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 which has been a hit in the Indian market as well. This price range actually has a lot of competition, to be honest. This phone is sold at Rs 13000 and in many people’s opinion, this is an ideal value for money phone available in the market in that price range.

Details

The Asus zenfone Max Pro M2 comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 screen which gives immense protection. Most of the phones in this price range only manage to give Corning Gorilla Glass 5 but this phone comes with an upgrade. The display is absolutely amazing and the screen to body ratio is also something that is commendable. The notch is not at all irritating because it does not take up a lot of space in the front display. It has an absolutely modern design and the back panel looks really good.

In fact, the main highlight of the whole design of this phone is the back panel which comes in a very unique colour. People who do not have a lot of knowledge about the phone would definitely mistake the back to be made out of class but it is not true. Many other phones from Asus had an aluminium back but this phone only has an aluminium frame and a glossy plastic back. The plastic back actually gives a lot of advantage for many reasons. The main reason is the fact that glass backs are really fragile and are prone to breaking, where is the same is not true for plastic back. Also, the texture and the shine makes it look like glass which is really commendable.

The most surprising part is the weight of the phone. It definitely has a large 5000 mAh battery inside of it but weighs much less than redmi Note 6 Pro which comes with a much smaller 4000 mAh battery. We can conclude that the phone has been well-built and well-designed, keeping in mind, the elegance.

The back is, of course, a downgrade from the previous one which had the aluminium back but this one feels much better in hand and it does not even look like plastic. So that is nothing you have to worry about.

The phone comes with a huge 6.26 inch screen making it ideal for watching videos and playing games in it. Also, the IPS panel with a resolution of 2280×1080 makes the colours very vibrant.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 has a bigger screen than the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and you can definitely feel the difference too. It is mainly because the screen stretches a lot towards the top and the notch is also very small. The colours on the phone does not disappoint much but Asus could have definitely done better. Not much should be expected from the phone which has so many features to offer anyway and this is also a negligible drawback. It also has a feature called the backlight dimming, which gets annoying at times.

What basically happens is when you are viewing darker content on your phone, backlight intensity would automatically go down and vice versa. While watching a video, if there are a lot of variations of light in the content, the backlight intensity would go up and down rapidly which is not something you would definitely like. So many good brands like Apple, Samsung and Google who are known for their display calibration do not give this feature because they know that it is not something that a user would be really friendly with.

Overall, for the price at which the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 comes at, the display is good enough and we cannot complain much about it.

The Software Of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2

Out of the box, this phone comes with the latest Android which is the Android 8.1 Oreo along with the stock Android. Everybody loves stock Android because the user interface is very friendly and the operating system does not lag at all. The reason is, it does not come with many pre-installed apps and keeps much of the storage free unlike other operating systems such as the MIUI or the Color OS, for example.

Pure Android users love this because the OS is highly untouched and they can actually experience Android like it was meant to be experienced, in the first place. The drawback of the stock OS is the fact that a lot of features will be missing in the settings, which used to make customisation much easier.

This can be called as a clumsy execution of putting the stock Android in the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 because of many reasons. The user does not get the feature to hide the notch in any manner whatsoever. The icons in the status bar are not sized properly and the alignment is also not very enticing. The clock happens to be really small and it is a mess in the status bar, to be honest. They did put the stock Android but if they would have put a little more effort into the software of the Asus Zenfone Max Pro 2, it could have been much better. After all, the user interface really matters for any user because that is what defines the comfort for him/her while using the device. In conclusion, it was a nice try by Asus but definitely did not execute as well as they thought it would.

Performance of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2

This phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor which is one of the best processors that phones in this price range offer. The 3GB RAM variant with 32GB of storage might lag a little bit, if the storage space is almost full but the 4 GB RAM variant with 64 GB of storage would not disappoint. After all, 64 GB is good enough for any smartphone if you are not keeping very many big files on your internal storage. It does not have a hybrid sim slot which means that you can insert an SD card and still have slots for inserting two SIM cards. It allows you to expand your storage by 2TB and there is nothing you have to worry about.

Overall, the gaming performance is really good and most of the credit goes to the stock Android. Games like PUBG Mobile worked absolutely fine in medium settings and the gameplay experienced no lag whatsoever.

Everyday performance is absolutely fine in this phone and the gaming experience was good also. If performance is your main concern, you would not be disappointed with the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2.

Audio And Camera Of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2

This phone has one loudspeaker at the bottom which is not very loud. Along with it, the quality of the sound that the speaker produces is also not that good and it sounds unpleasant if you listen to it in full volume. 60-70% volume on this phone is absolutely fine but again, that is not very loud.

Coming to one of the main concerns of people using smartphones these days, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 has a dual rear camera setup. There is the primary 12 megapixel camera which has the ability to capture 4K videos and a 5 megapixel depth sensor which allows the portrait images to be clicked.

Before we get to the quality, we should appreciate Asus for customising their camera app in a very good way. A lot of new features have been added to the stock camera app which betters the experience of clicking photos on this phone.

Now, the quality of the photos clicked with the back camera is absolutely amazing. The colours are defined and natural, while the white balance is also accurate. The pictures clicked outdoor as well as indoor have very little noise in them. The Portrait mode has a good edge-detection and one cannot deny the fact that this phone has one of the best cameras in this price range. The HDR mode also works perfectly and there is absolutely nothing to complain about the camera quality of the rear setup.

Videos shot on this phone also look awesome and the advantage of electronic stabilization definitely adds up a lot to the whole quality. Clicking videos at 4K however, would not allow you to use the electronic image stabilization which is a drawback but it should not be a concern for many.

The secondary camera is a 13 megapixel one which manages to click very decent pictures. The face detection feature works absolutely fine in this phone and helps you to click a good group selfie. The low light camera performance of both the rear camera and the secondary camera could have been a little better. The maximum resolution for the videos shot using the selfie camera is 1080p and electronic image stabilization feature again comes into play, making the video quality much better with lesser shakes, in between.

The Battery Life Of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2

The Zenfone Max Pro M2 has a battery of 5000 mAh which is, to be honest, huge. The battery capacity of this phone is the main highlight. As expected, the phone provides a good battery life and one can use the phone for almost two days straight.

Charging the phone definitely takes a bit of time because the capacity is high. Moreover, it only supports up to 10 watts of charging and takes around 3 hours to get from 0% to 100% with the charger that comes inside the box. The charging port still is the microUSB one and it is pretty annoying since many phones have already switched to USB Type C. Not much big of a deal and the huge battery capacity counters all of these flaws.

The phone gives a 40 hours of standby time with full charge and a 10 hours of on-screen time which is absolutely breathtaking for a phone of this price range.

The Final Verdict

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 needs to improve in a lot of places. Its predecessor which was the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has been quite a phone and was sold rapidly as well for being a good device at its price. This device is not as good as that but it definitely got the attention of many people by giving the very powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor and a 5000 mAh battery. If performance and battery are your main concerns in a smartphone, you would definitely love to have this phone in your hands. Also, the lock of this phone is so elegant that it has the potential to catch many eyeballs.

On the other hand, if camera is the main priority of you in a smartphone, there are definitely better options available in the market than the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2. It is not that the camera is bad but it is not as good as the other phones in this price range such as RealMe 2 Pro and so on.

Going with the stock Android was a good move by Asus, specifically because the main potential of the very powerful Snapdragon 660 can only be noticed this way. The phone does not cause any problem in everyday uses even if you have very many games loaded on the device. The gameplay is also smooth and the performance is something that would never disappoint you.

In conclusion, this phone is not for everyone but if the battery life, design and performance are your main priorities, this phone is definitely for you and you don’t have to think twice before opting for it.
